Work Diary - Multiple Imagery

During this session i got quite confused and didn't think it was meant to be like photo joiner so i didn't take as many photographs for my photo joiner as i should've which made it harder when trying to create the final images .

This is the first multiple image which i got, there is meant to be 9 photographs but i only took four so i just made the photograph like that. I like the way in which multiple imagery differs from photo joiner, instead of re-creating an image there just four images of the same things in any order.

This is the second photo joiner image, again i did not take enough photographs for one of them so instead i took a couple of photos which looked similar and used them swell. The overall effect is not that bad but if i was to redo this session then i would make sure i took 9 photos for everything in order to create better multiple imagery photographs.

Progression - If i was to redo this shoot i would make sure i captured enough photographs and i would also widen my ideas and take photographs of things other than plants and tree, i would like to take some using models in order to capture different emotions or angles. I will take my ideas into the studio when i can take some photographs using models in a more comfortable environment.

This is a photographs which i found on the internet, i feel that it is a good example of how i want my some of my work to look like in further sessions. It captures a models face in several different angles .

Work Diary - Walk 2

This shoot is slightly different to the others was we went on another group walk from the college up to Netswell pond. We had to capture more images under the same themes from walk 1 which were autumn colours, a sense of journey and back of heads.

This is one of the photographs i took for my sense of journey, it captures a bin, bench. and the multiple paths which represent that in life there will be times to rest, times to get rid of the rubbish in your life that you no longer need and the paths represent that there is multiple ways in which we could go and we have to choose which path is best for your journey in life.

I like this back of head photograph, because it focus' on Chloe's head and blurs out Alex's. I think that this photograph would be good if Gracie wasn't in the background also taking photographs, i like it because it would also capture the blurred out underpass had it been  clear view.

Progression- If i was to re-do this walk i would try and capture more autumn colours because i feel that the contrast of colours is good, when i shoot contrast i will try and include this element into my work. I feel that this photograph take by the Guardian Camera Club, it shows a good contrast of colours as well as being based upon autumn colours.

Work Diary - Contrast Location 2

This was our second session of going on location and take photographs of contrast. This was simple but not as easy as it was the first time round. Although i wasn't struggling for ideas it was hard to gain a lot of images which were different to the ones which i took in the session before

This is one of the photographs which i took from this shoot, i really like this picture because it is simple and contrasts the leave with the pavement. I also really like the colours of the leave as they are a mixture of orangey reds.

I also took a couple of pictures of automatic doors as it shows open & close contrast. I feel i captured this motion extremely well as there is no blurring or people getting in the way.

Progression - If i was to re-do this session i would capture some more conceptual contrasts as i feel that they create a deeper contrast. This photograph was taken by Lisa Holloway, it is showing a contrast of age, as it is showing an old hand against a babies hand. I feel that this is a good example of some of the contrast that i would like to capture in future shoots.

Work Diary - Contrast Studio 2

These are some of the photographs from my second shoot of Contrast in the studio. I feel that it was still hard to think of a variety of ideas but the photographs  do differ from the other people in  my group.

This is an image of my 3 models which is showing the contrast in hair colour, it doesn't look very easy to see the contrast as the lighting is extremely low in the studio so that is something which i would change if i was to re-do this shoot.

I like this photograph of Molly & Alex because it captures fun expressions whilst capturing a gender contrast and a height difference. This photo is also extremely dark so it ruins the effect of the photograph.

Progression - If i was to re-do the shoot i would make sure that the lights are bright in order to avoid this dark look which is on all of the photographs from this shoot. whilst researching contrast photography, i found several photographs which had one specific item in colour and the rest is black and white. I like this effect because it makes the contrast between the colored part and non colored part more prominent. This is an example from the internet.I like the use of selective colour when using contrast and it is something i wish to incorporate into my work.

Work Diary - Contrast Studio 1

For this shoot, we had to come up with visual and conceptual ideas of contrast and then photograph them. This was difficult because it was hard to come up with different ideas which people in the group hadn't previously used in order to gain some originality.

This is one of the photographs which i took from this shoot, it is showing the contrast of hair colours of Connie and Scarlett, this photograph could be improved by having a better composition on it as it is showing some of the white background paper roll at the top.

This is another photograph from my shoot which is showing the height difference between my 3 models. This photograph would be good if it had the rest of Josh' head in and if the models were further away from the background as they are too close so it has made a shadow which does not look as good as it would if there was no shadow.

Progression - If i was to re-do this shoot i would try to take more photographs because i did not take a lot and they were not that great photographs so i did not have a good selection of photographs to pick from. A photograph i found online which was taken by Mitchell Wapner shows a contrast between the colours and outfits of the model with the background. This is an example of what i would like to do in my own future shoots as i feel that contrasting of what people wear is very effective.

Work Diary - Mapplethorpe Studio

In this session, we were continuing with our Mapplethorpe inspired work, i thought that this session was a lot harder because we were using a camera on a stand and i found it difficult adjusting the camera so it was in the right position and it was also hard finding different ideas to take photographs.

This is one of my photographs from this session and this picture of Molly shows me how my work needs to be improved, it may be an up close shot but the orientation of it cuts out the hair so if the camera was portrait then it would have better composition.

This photograph of Chloe i feel is more similar to Mapplethorpe's work as she has got  a very simple facial expression and although i like the photograph there is a lot of excess background on the left and upper parts of the photograph.

Progression - If i was to re-do this session i would try and use more models in order to gain a wider variety of images which relate to Mapplethorpe's work, i would also work on my composition as i feel it still needs some more work. This is one of Mapplethorpe's photographs, he is using two models and he is contrasting their skin against each other and the back ground. I would like to use more than one model in my work as i feel that Mapplethorpe's use of two models has a greater effect than just one.

Work Diary - Mapplethorpe Location

In this session we were taking photographs which are inspired by Mapplethorpes portraiture, at first i thought this would be quite a simple task as his photographs look quite simple but when you look at many of Mapplethorpes' photographs you will see that his composition is good and that he does not have an excess border around his photographs.
These are two photographs in which i took which are similar to one of Mapplethorpes', in the top one you can see some of the white plastic which no longer creates a simplistic photograph with good composition, so when i re-took the photograph i made sure that it was just the orange background in the shot.

This is another one of the photographs which i took, i feel that it is similar to some of Mapplethorpe's work as it captures a simple expression on Molly's face whilst also capturing some of the background. If i was to improve this photograph i would make it portrait instead of landscape as it would capture the end of Molly's hair instead of cutting it off.

Progression - If i was to re-do this session i would make sure that all the photo's i took would have good composition and i would try and capture some more photographs against different backgrounds so it makes the image look more interesting. This is one of Mapplethorpe's self portraits but instead of using a plain background he has got a star behind him. I feel that this makes the photograph more interesting so i would like to use different backgrounds in my work.

Work Diary - Contrast Location 1

In this session we were sent out to find contrast in and around the college. We needed to capture visual and conceptual contrast. I found the visual contrast easier to capture as i just needed to look for it whereas the conceptual contrast i needed to put the contrast in the picture, i.e Gracie & Nathan as she is short and he is tall.

This photograph of Nathan & Gracie is showing a contrast between height however the background was not the well planned as it was just a spontaneous photograph hence why there are people in the background and there is the side of a building. If the background was different, like a single colour or pattern then i think that this photograph would be much better as there is too much happening in the background which takes the focus off of Nathan and Gracie.

I like this photograph of hula hoops in the vending machine because not only is the lighting focusing on the packet which shows a contrast between the packet and background colours it also shows a contrast of colours of the crisp packet, the yellow and red. I think that this photograph would be good if there were no other packaging in the photograph. Another way i could improve this photograph is to show it in contrast with another packet of crisps in the vending machine.

Progression -
If i was to redo this session i would take into consideration the backgrounds of my photographs before taking them as this brings the overall quality of the photograph to a lower standard as it just looks sloppy. i would also try and get some more conceptual photographs like a half full cup and a full cup. I would like to add some more contrasts with people in, like their height and their expressions. This is one of the photographs i found online when making my contrast definition post

Work Diary - Walk 1

In this session, as a group we went on a walk within a short distance of the college, we visited fields, a pond and along the roads. We were aiming to capture several things such as; autumn colour and a sense of journey. I enjoyed this topic because we could explore other surroundings and capture photographs which we would not of been able to get within the college. I also enjoyed it because we could capture the changes around us as the seasons change.

Progression - If i was to redo this walk i would capture back of the head location portraits as there were a wide variety of back grounds which would've created great backgrounds. I feel my back of head portraiture photographs would be greatly improved if i had captured some from this walk. This is a photograph i found online when researching back of head portraiture. I feel it captures enough background around the head so that you can still see that it is not in the studio but not too much to cause a bad composition.

Work Diary - Studio Back of Head

In this session we were studying the formal element of portraiture but instead of taking photographs of the face we were told to take them of the back of peoples heads. We had two different settings, in the studio and on location.
In the studio we were split into groups and sent in, we had an array of different coloured backgrounds we could use; white, black and pink. I found this topic quite easy because taking a photograph of the back of someones head isn't hard.

Progession;
If i was to redo this session i would like to take some pictures with the white backgrounds as it would brighten up the photographs, this is an example. It makes the details in her braiding much more clearer.

I like this photograph of Dylan as it captures his back as well as the black background. It captures his stillness.

I like this photograph of Meghan as it has the back of her head and also the movement of her arms whilst she holds up the feather boa. I like this picture because it is more interesting than the others.

Work Diary - Location Back of Head

In this session we were studying the formal element of portraiture but instead of taking photographs of the face we were told to take them of the back of peoples heads. We had two different settings, in the studio and on location.
When we went on location, it was easier to find a variety of different backgrounds to capture the different backs of peoples heads against. I didn't find this topic very hard at all.

Progression; If i was to redo this session i again would get the models to do more interesting things as i feel the photographs i took are very boring. This is an example of the kind of photograph which although it is not extremely interesting it is not simplistic.

I like this photograph of Meghan because it focuses on her hair and blurs out the background, this is a quality of portraiture which is key.

This is another picture of Meghan, i like this photograph because instead of there being just one object in the background there are two which makes the picture less boring.

Work Diary - Shape

In this session we were focusing our photographs on the formal element of shape. I found this easy as there are shapes all around us. The only thing which caused an issue was the fact the camera has difficulty focusing on close-ups but i think i need to google it and find out how to fix this.

This is an image which i took from our shape session, i like this because not only does it show the circular shape of the boulevard but it also shows the irregular shapes of the rain drops which have remained on the surface. I like the way the light is reflecting on some of the rain drops.

This photograph of square tiled bricks on the floor is showing the four sided square shape which has been repeated to create a pattern. I like this picture because as it is so plain it shows us that there is shapes all around us in everyday life, we just don't recognise them as everything is made up of different shapes.

If i was to redo this session i would like to of had more images to choose from however some of the photographs i have taken have been good for my project.

Work Diary - photo joiner

In this session we were originally sent out to take images of texture but then the change in weather meant that we couldn't take the pictures properly so we changed topics to photo joiner. We need to take an image of a person, object and building. When i was trying to take pictures of the object and Molly, the camera was focusing properly so i could not zoom properly so when i tried to edit the picture together they did not look right.

This is one of the images i took of Molly, it is on the bottom part of the overall image.

This image is of a costa cup but it is only showing half the cup but it is blurry  when it isn't zoomed in a lot and the focus didn't adjust so the majority of these images are blurry.

If i was to redo the photo joiner session i would've changed the settings on the camera to make the focus adjust to the settings properly without creating blurry images.

Work Diary - Texture

In our texture session we were told that the sunlight would help give us the lighting to capture the textures around us. As we started this session the sun was out and i took quite a lot of texture images and then the sun went behind some clouds so we had to change topics to photo joiner but in the time given i took enough pictures. I thought that the formal element of texture was easy to capture.

This image of a brick wall is showing the hard texture of the bricks. It will be rough and jagged as each brick will not be the exact same.

I took this image of the floor and i feel it shows the roughness of the carpet. It is not a soft carpet sand is rather bobbly. I feel it shows the formal element of texture as it is showing the material of the carpet.

If i was to redo my texture session i would try and capture more pictures just to have the opportunity to have more to select my final images from.

Work Diary - Movement

In the movement session, we had to change the shutter speed on the camera so it captures the movement we want. My camera couldn't capture images of movement outside as when i tried taking them outside the whole image came out as white, i don't know why this is so i couldn't change the settings so that i could capture some movement outside, but i feel that the pictures i took inside captured the element of movement well.

This image i took shows the movement of Alex waving his hand, it captures the blurring of the different positions his hand is in.

This image shows movement of people going down stairs. It shows the blurring around the two people as they move down the stairs.

If i was to redo the movement session i would find out why my pictures went white and stop that.

Work Diary - Reflection

In our reflection session, it was quite a dark gloomy day so there were the occasional puddle in which I could capture some reflection, there are also quite a few of mirrored surfaces around the college and Harlow Town Centre. Although there were a few reflective surfaces there were not many which actually made finding good reflective photographs quite hard.

This image is showing the reflection of a sign post in the pond. It is not a clear reflection as the water is not clear but it still creates a reflection. I like this photograph because there is something simple about it but it still shows the reflection.

I like this photograph as it shows the sweet machine and the reflection of that and the others next to it in the window behind it. This also is not a very defined reflection but it still shows this formal element.

If I was to redo the reflection session, I would try to do it on a sunnier day so that I have the light from the sun to help create more reflection images. I feel that this would really improve certain reflection photographs.

Work Diary - Tone

For our tone session, we altered the settings on our camera so that all photographs we took were in black and white. This made the session fairly easy as tone is all around us so I captured quite a few photographs. I enjoyed this session as shooting in  black and white is different to our normal sessions so I found in more enjoyable.

This is one of the photographs i took in the tone session, i think it shows tone as you can see the light tone to the branches/leaves on the plant, and the darkness of the trees behind it.

I like this photograph because i like the way the light tone of the little flowers contrasts with the dark colour of the leaves behind it. The tone isn't that clear but it is definitely there.

Progression -If I could redo my tone session, I would focus on the tone of objects which move i.e humans or animals as I think it would be quite interesting to capture the tone of these things. This is a photograph that i found online taken by Robert Dawson and it captures three horses running, i like the way the horses hair colour differs and the way he has managed to capture tone in the way in which i would hopefully like to progress my work.

Work Diary - Form

In this session, we were taking images of form. This was easy as it was  a sunny day so there were clear signs of where the form was. In this session i had my own camera so i took more images which means that i have a wider selection of images to choose from. I enjoyed taking images of form as there was so many things to photograph.

This is one of my many images that i took during the form session, it shows a bench and the shadow it has created. It shows the slimness of the beams that are holding the structure up.

I like this images because it shows the shadow of one building against another. It also shows the reflection of the window which has the shadow of the blue railing in the light of the reflection as well. It shows the form of the railing and the building and those surrounding it.

Progression - If i was to re-do this session i would of gone off the college grounds and go out the other side, as i left to go to the town but when i got there i struggled to get some good images as the sun went behind a few clouds so i came back to college to find some more on sight. I would like to use more models in my work as i feel that it shows form better than buildings do, an example i found was taken by Alan High. It is an example of the style, using models, which i would like to include in my work.
