Defintion - Contrast

Dictionary Defintion - 'The state of being strikingly different from something else in juxtaposition or close asssociation.

Words that describe contrast - dramatic, subtle, strong, weak

This photograph of apples shows a contrast in colours. The contrast comes from the bright greens to the singular red apple which is surrounded by green apples.

This photograph is showing two types of conotrast as it is showing and old, aged hand with a young fresh hand upon the top. It is also showing a contrast with small and large.

This photograph is showing a conceptual contrast as there is no contrast in colour, pattern or objects. It is showing one full glass and one empty glass.

This photograph of a sand bank in a desserts showing contrast between smooth and waved. There sands have different textures probably due to the wind and the people who walk on it. I like this photograph because it captures the two different types of sand on one hill.

My Definiton - I think that contrast means a difference between two things, it can be optical or conceptual. For example a contrast  in colours is optical and a conceputal contrast could be open and closed.

Definition - Portraiture

Dictionary Definition - 'The art of painting or taking portraits'

Words to describe portraiture - self, close-up, family

This image of young boy is capturing the laughter and happiness of the young boy in that exact moment. It captures the formal element of form as well. He is holding his feet in away  which suggests hat he is holding himself up because he is only young.

This portrait captures the emotionless face of a young man. This photograph also captures the form of his face. There is a slight shadowing on the left side of his face and the right side is clear and almost looks smooth.

This is one of the more creative portrait photographs. This is still a portrait photograph but it is not a head on shot, it is from the side and she is holding a magnifying glass over her eye which is enlarging her eye.

This is another photograph of a baby, i feel babies are used as the models of portraiture because they will give very natural poses as they can't be controlled so they will create pictures which cannot be replicated due to the fact no two babies will make the exact same pose.

My definition - An image or painting of a person or group of people.

Definition - Texture

Dictionary Definition - the quality of something that can be decided by touch; the degree to which something is rough or smooth, or soft or hard.

Words to describe texture -  rough, smooth, soft, hard, jagged, wet

This photograph is showing the texture of the wall as it looks rough, hard and jagged. This is probably due to the fact the wall is ageing.

This photograph of a kiwi is showing the different textures of a kiwi. The inside of the kiwi will be smooth and moist with hard seeds and the outer skin is furry. I feel that this image represents the formal element of texture very well.

This image is showing the texture of the leaf as it appears smooth but bumpy as there are several indents within the leaf. It shows texture well as it is clearly shows the surface of the leaf which gives us a rough idea of how the leaf would feel if it was touched.

This photograph of the brick wall is showing the jagged, rough, hard surface of the bricks. as the bricks have not been laid in a way in which they make a smooth wall.

My definition - The way something appears and the way it feels.

Definition - Shape

Dictionary Definition - 'An arrangement that is formed by joining lines together in a particular way or by the line or lines around its outer edge.

Words to describe shape - big, small, rounded, squared, irregular, regular, symmetric.

This photograph is showing shape as there is several hexagons joined together to create the recurring pattern on this building. The shape is the hexagon which is made up of several lines joined together.

This image is of the roof in King's Cross Train Station. The shape has been of several triangles joined together to create squares. I like this image as it shows the structure of the archway which has been made up of several shapes joined together.

This image of to elephants is showing the shape of a love heart as both of there trunks are positioned in the way which creates a love heart. It also has the outline of the elephants which shows the shape of them. I  like this photograph as i like the way the sunset behind the elephants make the outline stand out more.

This photograph is showing shape of a love heart and the circle shape of the ring. The way the ring has been placed and the lighting behind it combine to create the outline of a love heart.

My definition - The outline of a particular object with no regard to the content within the outline.

Definition - Movement

Dictionary Defnition - The Cambridge dictionary states that movement is 'a change of position'

Words to describe movement ; quick, slow, blurred, dart, plunge

This image is showing movement as the surrounding landscape of trees and grass is blurred, as the photographer has captured the scene from a bike.

This dog shows movement, as the dog is running along the grass the legs appear to have disappeared but this is because it has captured the movement of the dogs limbs as it runs which we wouldn't see normally. It also captures the movement of the dog across the field as the background is blurred and the dog is in focus.

This photograph shows the movement of the sword which has been swung, we normally wouldn't be able to see the sword moving from the starting position to the end, the motion of the sword is captured before it strikes the back of the man on the floor.

This photograph captures the moving motion of the tube in front of the woman, we don't see this blur from our eyes but as the train is moving so fast when captured it is blurred.

My definition - movement is the motion of which an object moves from one location to another.

Definition - Reflection

Dictionary Definition -  the image of something in a mirror or on any reflective surface

Words to describe reflection - illusions, mirrored, symmetrical

This image shows the reflection of two people on a beach, from a pair of sunglasses taken at an angle. This images shows that there is much more to the scene that what is being captured.

This image of the Eiffel Tower shows reflection as it is mirrored into the water in front of the tower. It also shows more of the Eiffel Tower that the still object. I like this images because the brightness of the tower against its background is reflected also in the waters surface.

This image of a lakes landscape shows reflection as it captures the many bright colours of the sky and mirrors them perfectly in the waters surface.

This image captures reflection of the woman doing yoga on the waters edge. As well as it capturing the reflection of the woman it captures the reflection of the different colours in the sky.

My Definition - Reflection is when something is mirrored in any reflective surface.

Definition - Tone

Dictionary Definition - a form or degree of a colour

Words to describe tone - chromatic, bright, dark, contrast, grey scale

This image is showing the tone of the two hands, the females hand is lighter and the males darker. Also the background around these two arms is darker.

There is tone shown in this photograph because you can see that there is some lightness in the lines which travel down the leaf and the darkness of the shadow under the light.

Although this image is not in black and white like most images which show tone, it still shows tone as both the colours in the leaves are of a bright nature and the surrounding water is dark.

This photograph shows tone as it shows the lightness of the mountains in the background and the darkness of the mountains in the foreground, from this photograph I can interpret that this is due to shadows which have been caused by natural lighting.

My definition - Tone is the lightness or darkness of a colour

Definition - Form

Dictionary Definition - The online Cambridge dictionary says that form is 'the shape or appearance of something'

Words to describe form - rounded, square, slim, fat, dynamic, structured.

<This image of somebody's chest shows form as the shadowing creates a structure of the collar bone. It is in black and white as this increases the appearance of the shadows. It shows the form of the human body and how defined it is.

This image is showing >
the form of a building and archway as it is showing the shadows created by the building and it shows that the structure of the posts as they also have shadowing.

<This image of a tree is showing form from the the crooked branches being reflected on the ground. It shows that the tree is a 3d object, not just a 2d image.

This image of the woman showing >
her bare back with a reflection of some railings along her back. It shows the form of her body as their  are shadows up the side of her body and the railing shadows highlight the form of the building.

My Definition - I think that form is the way an object is made up. It is the way in which the things we see are presented. Images of form show 3 dimensional things in a 2 dimensional format.

Description - Depth

Dictionary definition - The definition of depth  from the online Cambridge dictionary is 'the distance from the front to the back of something'.

Words to describe depth - deep, dimensional, profound, thick, shadowed

My definition - The angle of something which makes it look like there is more than one dimension to it.

This image shows depth as it shows the rail way track getting smaller as it goes into the distance. It also shows depth as it is focused on the beginning of the track which is in clear focus and the rest of the track is less clear, this shows depth as it shows there is more to the scene than what its focused on.

This image represents depth well as the camera focuses on the first bowling ball but you can see that there are other balls in the shot.

This brick wall is showing depth as you can see that the scene is showing something which is 3d..

This image is good because it not only shows depth in the railway tracks but in the beams which the bridge is made of.The light coming from the rear of the image gives a natural, dusky look to the image which creates the needed effect to show it is 3d.

Definition - Patterns

Dictionary Definition - The online Oxford Dictionary says that a pattern is a 'A repeated decorative design' .

Words to describe patterns - broken, checked, even, flowery, recurring, repeated, marbled, psychedelic, spotty, tartan, striped, mathematical.

My definition of patterns - A design which is repeated in a recurring sequence to create a design which is identical the whole way through.

This is an image of a metal frame work which has been embossed with the 4 line pattern which alternates and gets repeated the whole way down the metal. As the 4 lines are embossed they are raised which add shadow to the pattern which makes one set of lines look lighter than the other.

This is an image of the inside of a rock, as you can see there is a patter made from all the different layers of the rock. The layer edges make the pattern as they vary in colour but they are all in a similar shape they just decrease in size the deeper in the rock they go.

This image of a plant has a pattern as the leaves are all the same shape and have grown in a way which makes them appear in  spiral shape. There is a pattern as the leaves are in the same shape as they go around the plant in the recurring spiral layers.

This image of bricks shows a pattern as the direction of the bricks alternates, one is horizontal and one is vertical etc.. This is repeated all over the floor to create the same pattern so that it is even across the whole of the floor. It is a symmetrical recurring pattern.

Definition - Colour

Dictionary definition - An online dictionary states that colour 'the quality of an object or substance with respect to light reflected by the object, usually determined visually by measurement of hue, saturation, and brightness of the reflected light; saturation or chroma; hue' .

Words which describe colour - bright, bold, vivid, dull, dark, light, cold, warm, colourful, deep, fluorescent, harsh, monochrome, rich, soft, faded.

My definition - my definition of a colour is the shade or tone of an object. All colours are found between white and black and the brain allows us to process this as colour.

I think that this image nicely represents colour as there is the vivid blue and white of the sky as the background which contrasts with the bold colours of the balloons, which are floating in the sky. As it is a sunny day, the sun adds a brightness to the image which wouldn't normally be there.

This image represents colour well as it is showing 4 bright crayons being shot at so they inside colour explodes against the grey background. With the background being a dull grey colour it makes the colour of the vibrant crayons stand out more, it makes it more eye catching.

This is a birds eye image of a bunch of multi-coloured straws. This images represents colour well as it shows a variety of bright colours which all complement each other. It shows a collection of bright summery colours. This is good because it is displaying feel good colours which will bring a positive outlook to the image.

This image shows various shades of colours through coloured pencils which have all been cleverly placed to create the image of a love heart. As it shows most shades of colours, it creates the illusion that all the colours blend well together in the transition between colours, i.e. from yellow to orange.

Definition - Lines

Dictionary definition - the definition of a line from the Oxford Dictionary is 'a long, narrow mark or band' , and from an online dictionary 'A geometric figure formed by a point moving along a fixed direction and the reverse direction'.

Words which describe lines - lines are very basic and can be either straight, curved, zigzag, parallel, continuous, repeated, irregular, linear, ridged, wavy.

My definition - my definition of a line is a series of continuous marks which separates two areas or adds depth to an area. Every thing we see is made up of a series of lines which vary in type.

This image of lightning striking over a city is a good example of natural lines, because they are squiggly irregular lines which light up the sky with the bright flashes of static electricity. It shows the white glow of the line which contrasts agasinst the darkness of the clouds. The lines will never have the exact same pattern which make the lines unique.
This is an image of a spiders web, i thought this image was a good representation of lines because each strand and connection of the silk is a line, which have been weaved together to form the web structure, they vary in size and no line will be exactly the same. The spiders web holds a vary of lines in such as straight, curved and rounded ones. The web is actually a continuous line as it is a single bit of silk which has been sewn into the web shape but there are are no breaks in the line. The color of the white silk contrasts against the dark background.
This image shows how important lines are in architecture. The structure of the building is made of several different materials which are all in the shape of lines. This shows that things which we don't really take much notice of such as the structure of buildings are all actually made of much simpler things than we think. They also add detail to the building as they are curved so they bring some shape to the building.
This image of the beach shows both natural and man-made lines. The lines in the sad is from the waves and the way in which they have crashed against the sand before the tide has retreated, they have created naturally curvy lines in the sand. The wooden structure on the sand is made of straight wooden planks which creates a stable structure.
