Connecting Essay 5

This is one of the photographs i found whilst doing some research into contrast photography. It is showing two different colours of pepper which is showing a bold colour difference as they are complementary colours, so the contrast of the colours makes it obvious they are different. I like the way this photograph is simple in its contrast of colours as it makes it easier to see the contrast. By manually placing these peppers next to each other it has created the blend of colours in which paling 2 complementary colours next to each other. I like this photograph because it is simple yet still shows the main element.

This is one of the photographs which i took during the contrast shoot. It is of two different coloured bushes that have grown next too each other.  I like this photograph because the colours are not similar or complementing but they still show a contrast of colours extremely well, as they are both bold and bright. There is also the odd red coloured leaf which adds a deeper contrast to the picture as the colours vary more. There is also contrast within this photograph as the two types of leaves that are growing on the branches are different so if the picture is looked at in depth it is easy to see the difference between the two leafs.

These photographs are connected as they are both natural objects like peppers and bushes as well as having the bold contrast of colours. They are both showing great colour differences as they are complete opposites of colour directly net to each other so the contrast is highly visible. I like both of these images as they are showing similar elements in very different ways. Also each pepper shape is similar but none are identical which is similar to the way in which each leaf is different to the other leaves.

Final Project Evaluation

Now that this project has come to an end, i can say that i feel it has helped me find my feet as an upcoming and learning photographer. As we started off with simple tasks such as shooting lines and colours which then graduated onto more complex elements such as form and depth, i feel this has opened my eyes as i now look at things in a completely different light. I had no knowledge of photography when i started and looking over my contacts sheet i can see an improvement of from when i started to now.
At the start of the project i didn't take many photographs in the sessions but as the project has progressed i am now filling several contact sheets for each session.
I have enjoyed this project as i feel it has helped me with my understanding of photography and how to capture a good photograph. I like the fact that although it has taught me a lot i have not found it extremely challenging as that would make it less enjoyable for me.
One of the things i have struggled with was the initial work load, i was not used to having to complete so much written work in such a short period of time, at the start i fell behind but quickly caught up and have stayed upon the work load with the odd exception but i can now see how important it is to stay on track with my work as there is so much to get done in such a short period of time. We started this project a mere 3 months ago but it feels like an eternity ago which i started off in photography taking photo's of lines and i feel that my work has progressed dramatically since my first session.
I am looking forward to the next project as i am hoping my work will further develop as the project goes on. As my work has improved within these 3 months i am hoping that in another 3 months that my work has improved even more.
I feel that i am well supported in photography and if there is something i don't understand i am confident enough to ask for help without feeling stupid from Paul or from my peers. This is mainly due to the good working conditions and happy vibe which is present within the photography room.

Connecting Essay 4

This photograph is one i collected on the internet when researching for colour photography. It is showing autumn leaves which are golden and bright orange along a path. It is also showing depth as the path goes into the horizon, i like this photograph because it captures a autumnal scene whilst all the leaves are still a bright crisp colour. I also like the way that the photograph not only captures the colours of the fallen leaves and leaves yet to fall but the way it captures the whole scene in order to show the whole picture so the person looking at the photograph doesn't need to think about the scene and where the photograph was taken as it is already shown.

4

This is one of my photographs which i took whilst on one of our group walks. I went through a couple of trees which brought me to a slight ditch in the forestry. This picture captures more than one colour of leaf which i like as it is showing the different stages of autumn. My photograph is showing a path although it is less distinctive, there is a muddy walk way which can be seen in between the two greener bushes.

These photographs are linked in the way that they are both showing the different colours of autumn and showing this through forests and paths within the forests. Both photographs show depth as the paths in both go from being wider to thinner which is showing the scene in a flat image. I like the way that in the first image it is showing just the single colour of orange in the photograph as it is showing that that is a recurring colour in autumn but i also like the way that the leaves go from green to orange in  my photograph as it is showing that autumn is ever changing and  nothing stays the same.

Connecting Essay 3

This is a picture from Robert Mapplethorpe's portraiture shoots, it is a self portrait which again captures the great composition which he seems to be able to get in every portrait. This photograph is showing Robert himself stretching out into the picture, like every portrait picture Robert has captured the composition in this picture is excellent, there is very little background in the picture which makes the eye focus more on the person actually in it. This is something Robert perfected in every photograph. His photograph is in black and white which makes the facial features bolder and adds the formal element of tone to the photograph as it is capturing his arm and face yet shows that it is not a flat image.

This is my photograph, it is showing my model holding her arm out also, her expression is plain and simple, this is capturing the form of her face as there is natural shadowing on her face. I have also tried to capture a good composition in this picture and i feel that it is almost perfect. I like the way this photograph captures a natural expression and makes the models face look motionless and captures a slightly serious mood in the photograph.

These photographs are connected in the way that they are very similar as my photograph was influenced by the Mapplethorpe portrait. They are also connected as they both show the form of the models in the pictures extremely well due to the shadowing on the faces and body of Robert. In Mapplethorpe's photograph there is a shadow behind his arm and along his shoulder blades and in my photograph it is showing the form in my models face around the eyes, neck and nose. In order to make these shadows more prominent both the photographs are in black and white. I was inspired by Mapplethorpe's photograph as i thought it was different and unique to styles of portraiture which i have seen previously. This made me want to try and re-create Mapplethorpe's photograph. However the composition is much better in Mapplethorpe's portrait.

Photographer 5

Mario Testino
Mario Testino  is a Peruvian fashion photographer who has worked with many celebrities, his work has appeared in Vogue and Vanity Fair. His work captures several formal elements such as colour, shape, tone and form. I like his work because unlike the other photographers which i have done my extended research on, Mario captures the formal elements with models instead of objects.

This photograph is of two models who are showing the formal elements of tone, pattern and colour. I like the way in which the clothing of the two models contrasts as the girl in the suit is showing tone and it is dark clothing and this contrasts with the other patterned dress. The dress is showing colour and pattern as it is a very vibrantly coloured and patterned dress. I would like to incorporate this idea of one formal element like colour next to something duller because it makes the colour the focus of the photograph.

This photograph is showing form and tone. It is showing form as there is shadowing around the neck, chest, and the way the hand is resting on the leg. It shows tone as you can clearly see there is a difference in colours other jackets and between the stool she is sitting on and the clothing which she is wearing. I like this photograph because it is simple yet captures both these formal elements so simply. I would like to incorporate some more work of models in my own work to use the element of form with people instead of objects as i feel it is more effective. There are also the formal elements of shape from the models necklace and the stool.

This photograph of Miley Cyrus is showing the formal elements of tone, shape, line and form. Tone is shown as you can see there is colour originally on the car which she is sitting in and on the top which she is wearing and from her lipstick. Line is shown from her hair and the strap of the top. Form is also shown here as it shows shadowing on and around her face neck and chest. I would like to include some of this technique into my own work because i feel like it captures the natural happy expression of Miley as well as capturing the formal elements so simply.

I feel this photograph represents the formal element of colour extremely well as it shows such a wide variety of bright and bold colours all extremely close together. I like the way in which all of the colours are similar to one another. I would like to bring some close ups into my work as i feel that they show the formal element just as  it is . I like the way the models eyes also show different colours and lines.

I feel Mario's work has influenced me to want to increase my use of models when capturing the formal elements as i feel it represents them well and they show the formal elements easily as you can manipulate the models into showing the element in the way you want. This is a photograph which i took which was inspired by Marios work as i am using a model to show form. I like the way that half of Alex's face is covered by light as this heightens the element of form. i feel it is similar to Testinos work because of the composition and the way it shows a formal element through the use of a model.

In summary i would like to continue using Mario Testino's style of shooting as i feel it is a good unique shooting style. I would like to do some studio shoots when capturing some of the formal elements .

Image Bank - Multiple Imagery

This is multiple image of an  old oil tank, the photographer has captured it from  several different angles in order to show the different sides and the different surroundings of each oil tank, they have a variety of oil tanks to show several different angles of different tanks.

These are 6 examples of multiple images. They all show different things from different angles are all edited together. The second from last image is of a set of stairs and i thought this was a really interesting multiple image as it shows several different people going up the stairs, and the stairs create a stripy effect.

Image Bank - Contrast

I feel that these 6 images represent contrast well as they are all showing either a colour contrast or a conceptual contrast. They may not be labelled as contrast photos i.e one of man and baby but it is showing an age contrast. The photograph of the coffee bean and the m&m shows contrast in colour as the beans are brown and the m&m is green, it is also showing a difference between product i.e coffee bean and chocolate.

Pre - Completion Evaluation

I have thoroughly enjoyed this project as i have had no previous experience with photography it has helped with my understanding of the elements, how to achieve a good composition and how to take a good photograph.

This project has been fun and i have enjoyed going out and taking photographs, at the beginning of the project i tended not to take a lot of photographs but now i feel that i have increased the amount of photographs i take every time we get sent out.
There is a good happy vibe in the classroom which i enjoy as it makes getting my work done easier.

I would say that i have struggled a bit with the work load a bit and but i feel that with the development work it has eased off slightly. I also have some difficulty with initially understanding some of the tasks we are set but after researching some similar images and asking my peers it helps me understand.

I would like to have a deeper understanding of photoshop and how to edit my photographs correctly and make them look nicer.

The thing i haven't enjoyed about this project is the work load as i do struggle with completing it all on time. But when we move onto the next project i hope that i will balance all my work in order to meet my deadlines.

Looking over all my work it is clear that the quality of photographs that i capture has vastly increased as at first it was extremely basic angles and they we're not that great photos but as the project has progressed so has my photographic imagination. I am looking forward to the next project in photography as i thought this project was extremely enjoyable.

Work Diary - Multiple Imagery

During this session i got quite confused and didn't think it was meant to be like photo joiner so i didn't take as many photographs for my photo joiner as i should've which made it harder when trying to create the final images .

This is the first multiple image which i got, there is meant to be 9 photographs but i only took four so i just made the photograph like that. I like the way in which multiple imagery differs from photo joiner, instead of re-creating an image there just four images of the same things in any order.

This is the second photo joiner image, again i did not take enough photographs for one of them so instead i took a couple of photos which looked similar and used them swell. The overall effect is not that bad but if i was to redo this session then i would make sure i took 9 photos for everything in order to create better multiple imagery photographs.

Progression - If i was to redo this shoot i would make sure i captured enough photographs and i would also widen my ideas and take photographs of things other than plants and tree, i would like to take some using models in order to capture different emotions or angles. I will take my ideas into the studio when i can take some photographs using models in a more comfortable environment.

This is a photographs which i found on the internet, i feel that it is a good example of how i want my some of my work to look like in further sessions. It captures a models face in several different angles .

Work Diary - Walk 2

This shoot is slightly different to the others was we went on another group walk from the college up to Netswell pond. We had to capture more images under the same themes from walk 1 which were autumn colours, a sense of journey and back of heads.

This is one of the photographs i took for my sense of journey, it captures a bin, bench. and the multiple paths which represent that in life there will be times to rest, times to get rid of the rubbish in your life that you no longer need and the paths represent that there is multiple ways in which we could go and we have to choose which path is best for your journey in life.

I like this back of head photograph, because it focus' on Chloe's head and blurs out Alex's. I think that this photograph would be good if Gracie wasn't in the background also taking photographs, i like it because it would also capture the blurred out underpass had it been  clear view.

Progression- If i was to re-do this walk i would try and capture more autumn colours because i feel that the contrast of colours is good, when i shoot contrast i will try and include this element into my work. I feel that this photograph take by the Guardian Camera Club, it shows a good contrast of colours as well as being based upon autumn colours.

Work Diary - Contrast Location 2

This was our second session of going on location and take photographs of contrast. This was simple but not as easy as it was the first time round. Although i wasn't struggling for ideas it was hard to gain a lot of images which were different to the ones which i took in the session before

This is one of the photographs which i took from this shoot, i really like this picture because it is simple and contrasts the leave with the pavement. I also really like the colours of the leave as they are a mixture of orangey reds.

I also took a couple of pictures of automatic doors as it shows open & close contrast. I feel i captured this motion extremely well as there is no blurring or people getting in the way.

Progression - If i was to re-do this session i would capture some more conceptual contrasts as i feel that they create a deeper contrast. This photograph was taken by Lisa Holloway, it is showing a contrast of age, as it is showing an old hand against a babies hand. I feel that this is a good example of some of the contrast that i would like to capture in future shoots.

Work Diary - Contrast Studio 2

These are some of the photographs from my second shoot of Contrast in the studio. I feel that it was still hard to think of a variety of ideas but the photographs  do differ from the other people in  my group.

This is an image of my 3 models which is showing the contrast in hair colour, it doesn't look very easy to see the contrast as the lighting is extremely low in the studio so that is something which i would change if i was to re-do this shoot.

I like this photograph of Molly & Alex because it captures fun expressions whilst capturing a gender contrast and a height difference. This photo is also extremely dark so it ruins the effect of the photograph.

Progression - If i was to re-do the shoot i would make sure that the lights are bright in order to avoid this dark look which is on all of the photographs from this shoot. whilst researching contrast photography, i found several photographs which had one specific item in colour and the rest is black and white. I like this effect because it makes the contrast between the colored part and non colored part more prominent. This is an example from the internet.I like the use of selective colour when using contrast and it is something i wish to incorporate into my work.

Work Diary - Contrast Studio 1

For this shoot, we had to come up with visual and conceptual ideas of contrast and then photograph them. This was difficult because it was hard to come up with different ideas which people in the group hadn't previously used in order to gain some originality.

This is one of the photographs which i took from this shoot, it is showing the contrast of hair colours of Connie and Scarlett, this photograph could be improved by having a better composition on it as it is showing some of the white background paper roll at the top.

This is another photograph from my shoot which is showing the height difference between my 3 models. This photograph would be good if it had the rest of Josh' head in and if the models were further away from the background as they are too close so it has made a shadow which does not look as good as it would if there was no shadow.

Progression - If i was to re-do this shoot i would try to take more photographs because i did not take a lot and they were not that great photographs so i did not have a good selection of photographs to pick from. A photograph i found online which was taken by Mitchell Wapner shows a contrast between the colours and outfits of the model with the background. This is an example of what i would like to do in my own future shoots as i feel that contrasting of what people wear is very effective.

Work Diary - Mapplethorpe Studio

In this session, we were continuing with our Mapplethorpe inspired work, i thought that this session was a lot harder because we were using a camera on a stand and i found it difficult adjusting the camera so it was in the right position and it was also hard finding different ideas to take photographs.

This is one of my photographs from this session and this picture of Molly shows me how my work needs to be improved, it may be an up close shot but the orientation of it cuts out the hair so if the camera was portrait then it would have better composition.

This photograph of Chloe i feel is more similar to Mapplethorpe's work as she has got  a very simple facial expression and although i like the photograph there is a lot of excess background on the left and upper parts of the photograph.

Progression - If i was to re-do this session i would try and use more models in order to gain a wider variety of images which relate to Mapplethorpe's work, i would also work on my composition as i feel it still needs some more work. This is one of Mapplethorpe's photographs, he is using two models and he is contrasting their skin against each other and the back ground. I would like to use more than one model in my work as i feel that Mapplethorpe's use of two models has a greater effect than just one.
