Work Diary - Studio Back of Head

In this session we were studying the formal element of portraiture but instead of taking photographs of the face we were told to take them of the back of peoples heads. We had two different settings, in the studio and on location.
In the studio we were split into groups and sent in, we had an array of different coloured backgrounds we could use; white, black and pink. I found this topic quite easy because taking a photograph of the back of someones head isn't hard.

Progession;
If i was to redo this session i would like to take some pictures with the white backgrounds as it would brighten up the photographs, this is an example. It makes the details in her braiding much more clearer.

I like this photograph of Dylan as it captures his back as well as the black background. It captures his stillness.

I like this photograph of Meghan as it has the back of her head and also the movement of her arms whilst she holds up the feather boa. I like this picture because it is more interesting than the others.

Work Diary - Location Back of Head

In this session we were studying the formal element of portraiture but instead of taking photographs of the face we were told to take them of the back of peoples heads. We had two different settings, in the studio and on location.
When we went on location, it was easier to find a variety of different backgrounds to capture the different backs of peoples heads against. I didn't find this topic very hard at all.

Progression; If i was to redo this session i again would get the models to do more interesting things as i feel the photographs i took are very boring. This is an example of the kind of photograph which although it is not extremely interesting it is not simplistic.

I like this photograph of Meghan because it focuses on her hair and blurs out the background, this is a quality of portraiture which is key.

This is another picture of Meghan, i like this photograph because instead of there being just one object in the background there are two which makes the picture less boring.

Photographer 4

Ross Hoddinott

Ross is a natural history and landscape photographer who originates from Cornwall. He captures several formal elements in his work and does it by using natural surroundings and models. I like his work because he represents the formal elements in such simple ways yet he includes several of them. I have included his work in my project because i like his style of work and the way he captures different formal elements.

This photograph of the robin is showing the formal elements of color and shape. / like the way the bright colour of the robin and the wooden handle contrast with the white background of which i assume is snow. It also shows shape as the outline of the wooden object, I'm guessing its a spade, is in the shape of a 't' which the robin is perched on. I like this photograph because i like the way the robin and spade are the focus of the image and the way that as they are the only colour in the photograph it makes them stand out more. This is a something which i feel i would like to include in my work.

This photograph of a lake shows the formal elements on depth, reflection and tone. The landscape is reflected in the water of the lake and there is tone in the way that the trees go from dark on the left side to a lighter shade as they get closer to the right. There is depth as it is a 3 dimensional scene which has been condensed into a photograph, we can see the dept from the shadowing on the rock and from the way the lake appears to get smaller as it is gets further in the distance. I like this photograph because it captures the calmness  of the scene whilst still showing such a vast landscape.

This photograph of a dragon fly shows the colour, tone and line. The bold blue colour of the insect contrasts with the bright green colour of the leafy background. The tone is shown in the colour of the fly, as the shades of blue differ some are slightly lighter and others are slightly darker. The line is shown from the body of the fly, it's legs and wings are made up of a series of lines and the faded wings of the fly although are not in focus we can still see the shape of them. I like this photograph because it focuses on the front of the fly and it shows us the detail of there faces. It enables us to see the insect in a way we never could.

This photograph of a horse shows the formal elements of tone, shape and line. There is tone in the way the horse is completely shadowed' out and the background is still bright in colour. Also the tone is shown in the colour of the sky as the colour at the top graduates from purple to a lighter shade and then into a peachy colour then into black The shape is shown by the horse as it is standing still so it captures the natural shape of a horse. The line is shown in the contrast of colours in the background as there are clear lines when the colour dramatically changes colour. I like this photograph because it captures a horse whilst in its natural surroundings with the beautiful colours of the sunset/rise are behind it.

Ross Hoddinott's work will influence my work as i feel the way he captures the vast colours and tones of objects is unique. I feel my work would improve if, like Ross, i captured some close up's of objects as this enhances the formal elements which can be found in them. I feel that this photograph is showing great detail in the tyre print as swell as the contrast of the brown of the mud and the green of the grass which some has been pushed into the imprint. It shows the detail well as the print is fresh so it is still bold in the mud. I feel it is similar to Hoddinott's photograph of the robin as that is a very detailed photograph which captures the detail from the robin  and the spade which it is sitting on.

In summary i would like to interpret some of the similar shooting styles as Ross, for example getting some close ups of different animals or objects to show detail as well as show the different formal elements like colour and shape as i feel these are interesting photographs to look at.

Image Bank - Portraiture

These 6 photographs represent portraiture photography well as it captures the  heads and faces of the people in them. Portraits can be captured in different ways they don't have to be just the emotionless face. Also selective colour can be used to create a good effect.

Definition - Portraiture

Dictionary Definition - 'The art of painting or taking portraits'

Words to describe portraiture - self, close-up, family

This image of young boy is capturing the laughter and happiness of the young boy in that exact moment. It captures the formal element of form as well. He is holding his feet in away  which suggests hat he is holding himself up because he is only young.

This portrait captures the emotionless face of a young man. This photograph also captures the form of his face. There is a slight shadowing on the left side of his face and the right side is clear and almost looks smooth.

This is one of the more creative portrait photographs. This is still a portrait photograph but it is not a head on shot, it is from the side and she is holding a magnifying glass over her eye which is enlarging her eye.

This is another photograph of a baby, i feel babies are used as the models of portraiture because they will give very natural poses as they can't be controlled so they will create pictures which cannot be replicated due to the fact no two babies will make the exact same pose.

My definition - An image or painting of a person or group of people.

Work Diary - Shape

In this session we were focusing our photographs on the formal element of shape. I found this easy as there are shapes all around us. The only thing which caused an issue was the fact the camera has difficulty focusing on close-ups but i think i need to google it and find out how to fix this.

This is an image which i took from our shape session, i like this because not only does it show the circular shape of the boulevard but it also shows the irregular shapes of the rain drops which have remained on the surface. I like the way the light is reflecting on some of the rain drops.

This photograph of square tiled bricks on the floor is showing the four sided square shape which has been repeated to create a pattern. I like this picture because as it is so plain it shows us that there is shapes all around us in everyday life, we just don't recognise them as everything is made up of different shapes.

If i was to redo this session i would like to of had more images to choose from however some of the photographs i have taken have been good for my project.

Photographer 3

Gisel Florez
Gisel is a still life photographer, who has her own studio set up in Brooklyn. She originates from American herself. I like her work because it is unique as there are barely any other photographers who capture the perfect frame for exploding objects. I choose her work for my project because i thought that her photographs were really interesting and the way in which they show the formal elements are different.

This photograph of an exploding pineapple captures the movement of the juices which creates several lines and patterns as it moves through the air and away from the pineapple. It also shows the bright colour of the pineapple against the dark contrasting black background.

This photograph of a large bubble is showing the abnormal colors that are created from the way the light is reflecting on the bubble. It also contains various lines, shapes and patterns from the different bubbles which have been captured inside the one large bubble. I think this photograph is very interesting.

I like this photograph of the burning paper because not only does it capture the movement of the flames but it also creates the silhouette of a person in the flames. The colours of the flame are a bold anger colour.

This image of an exploding apple, like the pineapple has an array of patterns line and shapes formed from the apple juice as they are released from the apple. It also shows the brightness of the green apple.

I like the way that the majority of Gisel's work captures the movement of things and i like her style. I think i would like to add some of this uniqueness into my work to make it stand out and be different to everything else.

I feel Gisel's work has influenced me to capture photographs in a unique way, it has made me want to expand my movement photography in order to capture similar interesting photographs.

In summary i feel that her work has widened my knowledge of movement photography as i now want to progress with my movement work as i feel these images and studying her work has helped me have a better vision on how to capture movement photography.

Work Diary - photo joiner

In this session we were originally sent out to take images of texture but then the change in weather meant that we couldn't take the pictures properly so we changed topics to photo joiner. We need to take an image of a person, object and building. When i was trying to take pictures of the object and Molly, the camera was focusing properly so i could not zoom properly so when i tried to edit the picture together they did not look right.

This is one of the images i took of Molly, it is on the bottom part of the overall image.

This image is of a costa cup but it is only showing half the cup but it is blurry  when it isn't zoomed in a lot and the focus didn't adjust so the majority of these images are blurry.

If i was to redo the photo joiner session i would've changed the settings on the camera to make the focus adjust to the settings properly without creating blurry images.
